What Actually Gets Approvals

The Difference Between Approved And Denied

Side by side: what German immigration rejects, what they approve.

Refused

What authorities reject
Salary below €50,700 or €45,934.20 threshold
Degree not in Anabin or rated below H+
Job role doesn't match your qualification
Missing or invalid German health insurance
Contract is freelance or indefinite-term only
IT claim without 3+ years documented experience

Approved

What authorities reward
Salary clearly above applicable threshold
Degree verified H+ in Anabin or ZAB-recognised
Job role aligns precisely with your qualification
Confirmed health insurance from employment start
Formal employment contract with specific terms
Complete, well-organised documentation package
Common Mistakes

Why Strong Profiles Still Get Denied

01
Missing The Salary Threshold

Gross vs net confusion. Bonus not counted. Check carefully — a €100 shortfall means rejection.

02
Skipping The Anabin Check

If your university isn't in Anabin or rated below H+, you need costly ZAB recognition first.

03
Job Title Mismatch

An IT engineering role for a marketing graduate will be refused — qualification must match role.

04
Missing IT Experience Proof

IT specialists skipping a degree must document 3+ years of employment in the last 7 — formally.

05
Late Health Insurance

Insurance must be active from day 1 of employment, not activated after arrival. Common refusal reason.

06
Ignoring Shortage Category

Many applicants pay standard threshold when their role qualifies for the lower shortage threshold.

FAQ

Questions We Hear Every Week

Do I need a German employer before applying?+
Yes. The Blue Card is employer-sponsored and requires a binding German job offer or employment contract meeting the salary threshold. If you don't have one yet, the Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) is a job-search visa that lets you enter Germany for up to 12 months to find employment, then switch to a Blue Card.
I work in IT but don't have a university degree. Can I still qualify?+
Yes. This is a major 2024-2026 reform. IT specialists without a formal university degree can qualify if they demonstrate at least 3 years of professional IT experience within the last 7 years, plus a job offer at €45,934.20 or above. This is the fastest-growing Blue Card category for Indian tech professionals.
Do I need to speak German?+
Not for the Blue Card itself — most German tech roles operate in English. German becomes important for the PR timeline: B1 German gets you PR in 21 months, A1 in 27 months. We recommend starting German classes alongside the Blue Card process.
Can my spouse work in Germany?+
Yes, immediately and without restrictions. Spouses of Blue Card holders receive full work authorisation from day 1, with no German language test required. This is one of the Blue Card's strongest family benefits compared to other European work visas.
Can I move to another EU country later?+
Yes. After 12 months of Blue Card employment in Germany, you gain EU-wide mobility — you can relocate to another EU member state and apply for their Blue Card with a simplified process. This is unique to the Blue Card and not available on standard work visas.
What is the Anabin database?+
Anabin is Germany's database of recognised foreign universities and degrees. Your university must be listed as H+ (equivalent to a German degree) for the Blue Card. Most well-known Indian institutions like IITs, IIMs, NITs and major private universities are H+. If not listed, you need ZAB (Zentralstelle für ausländisches Bildungswesen) recognition.
What if my salary is below the threshold?+
If you're below €50,700 and above €45,934.20, check whether your role qualifies for the shortage occupation list — it includes most STEM, IT, medical and engineering positions. Recent graduates within 3 years of their degree also get the lower threshold automatically. Below €45,934.20, the Blue Card isn't available but alternative visas may apply.
How long does the full process take?+
2–4 months end-to-end once you have a job offer. Anabin/ZAB recognition takes 2–6 weeks. Visa application at the German embassy takes 4–8 weeks. Arrival and residence permit issuance takes 2–4 weeks. If you need to find a job first via the Opportunity Card, add 3–12 months to the timeline.
