Global Talent Visa UK: endorsement criteria and how to get endorsed

The Global Talent visa has two stages. Stage 1 is the endorsement, where a body with expertise in your field decides whether you are a leader or potential leader. Stage 2 is the visa itself, which is mostly checks on identity and immigration history. Most refusals happen at Stage 1.

Who endorses you

The Home Office doesn't judge your career. It sends your application to an endorsing body for your field:

If you have won an eligible prize, the prize route lets you skip endorsement and apply for the visa directly. The list of eligible prizes is on GOV.UK and it is short.

Leader or potential leader

Every field has two levels. Exceptional Talent is for people already recognised as leaders. Exceptional Promise is for people earlier in their careers who are clearly on the way. The visa rights are the same, but in digital technology and the arts the settlement timeline differs: 3 years for Exceptional Talent, 5 years for Exceptional Promise. The digital technology criteria

GOV.UK sets out one mandatory criterion and a list of optional ones.

Mandatory: you have been recognised by others as a leading talent (or a potential leading talent) in digital technology in the last 5 years.

Optional, meet at least two:

• You have innovated as a founder or senior executive of a product-led digital technology company, or as an employee working on a new digital field or concept.
• You have contributed to the sector outside your job, for example through mentoring or collaborative projects.
• You have made significant technical, commercial or entrepreneurial contributions in a product-led company.
• You have published or endorsed research in the field.

Tech Nation also checks that your skills fall within the digital technology roles it covers. The technical list includes AI and machine learning, cybersecurity, DevOps, backend, frontend and mobile development, data science and UX. Business roles include product managers, commercial leaders and C-suite executives in product-led digital companies, and investors with a senior track record.

Its published list also names roles it does not cover: service delivery, process delivery, outsourcing, technical or management consultancy, ERP consultancy and systems administration. Business skills must be used in-house at a product-led digital company, not at an agency or outsourcer. This matters for a lot of people at large IT services firms. If your career has been in delivery or consulting, you may need to show product-side work, or look at a different route.

Why strong candidates get refused

The same four patterns come up again and again.

1. Recognition that stops at the employer. Promotions, internal awards and a big title show you are good at your job. They don't show the field has noticed you.
2. Letters that praise but don't explain. A letter saying you are brilliant, without saying what your work changed for people outside your company, carries very little weight.
3. The wrong level. Applying for Exceptional Talent with a Promise-level profile is a common way to be refused. It can also go the other way, where someone undersells themselves.
4. Evidence that doesn't map to the criteria. Ten good documents, but nobody explained which criterion each one proves.

If you are refused

You can apply again, and there is no fixed limit on the number of attempts. Tech Nation explains its reasons, and GOV.UK describes a review process for digital technology decisions. The better route is usually to fix the specific gap it named, which often means a few months building evidence, and then reapply with a tighter pack.

Where to start

Before you write anything, list your evidence against each criterion in two columns: what someone else said or did about your work, and what you did yourself.
