You need an endorsement before you can apply for the visa, unless you hold an eligible prize. Tech Nation endorses digital technology, Arts Council England endorses arts and culture, and the national academies and UKRI cover research. For digital technology you must meet the mandatory criterion plus at least two optional criteria.
The Global Talent visa has two stages. Stage 1 is the endorsement, where a body with expertise in your field decides whether you are a leader or potential leader. Stage 2 is the visa itself, which is mostly checks on identity and immigration history. Most refusals happen at Stage 1.
The Home Office doesn't judge your career. It sends your application to an endorsing body for your field:
| Field | Endorsing body |
|---|---|
| Digital technology | Tech Nation |
| Arts and culture | Arts Council England (with partner bodies for some disciplines) |
| Science, engineering, humanities, social science and medicine | The Royal Society, the Royal Academy of Engineering, the British Academy and UK Research and Innovation |
If you have won an eligible prize, the prize route lets you skip endorsement and apply for the visa directly. The list of eligible prizes is on GOV.UK and it is short.
Every field has two levels. Exceptional Talent is for people already recognised as leaders. Exceptional Promise is for people earlier in their careers who are clearly on the way. The visa rights are the same, but in digital technology and the arts the settlement timeline differs: 3 years for Exceptional Talent, 5 years for Exceptional Promise. Researchers can settle after 3 years either way. We cover the choice in detail in our Talent vs Promise guide.
GOV.UK sets out one mandatory criterion and a list of optional ones.
Mandatory: you have been recognised by others as a leading talent (or a potential leading talent) in digital technology in the last 5 years.
Optional, meet at least two:
Tech Nation also checks that your skills fall within the digital technology roles it covers. The technical list includes AI and machine learning, cybersecurity, DevOps, backend, frontend and mobile development, data science and UX. Business roles include product managers, commercial leaders and C-suite executives in product-led digital companies, and investors with a senior track record.
Its published list also names roles it does not cover: service delivery, process delivery, outsourcing, technical or management consultancy, ERP consultancy and systems administration. Business skills must be used in-house at a product-led digital company, not at an agency or outsourcer. This matters for a lot of people at large IT services firms. If your career has been in delivery or consulting, you may need to show product-side work, or look at a different route.
| Step | Usual time, per GOV.UK |
|---|---|
| Digital technology endorsement | 5 to 8 weeks |
| Research fast track (eligible job, fellowship or grant) | about 2 weeks |
| Research peer review | about 5 weeks |
| Visa decision after endorsement, applying from outside the UK | 3 weeks |
| Visa decision, applying from inside the UK | 8 weeks |
The endorsement fee is £561 and the visa fee is £205. There's more on money in our cost and processing time guide.
The same four patterns come up again and again.
If you remove everything you wrote about yourself, what is left? That pile is what the endorser is really assessing.
You can apply again, and there is no fixed limit on the number of attempts. Tech Nation explains its reasons, and GOV.UK describes a review process for digital technology decisions. The better route is usually to fix the specific gap it named, which often means a few months building evidence, and then reapply with a tighter pack.
Before you write anything, list your evidence against each criterion in two columns: what someone else said or did about your work, and what you did yourself. If the first column is thin, spend the next few months on talks, open-source, judging or writing that other people can see. Our free eligibility check gives you a quick read on where you stand.

Tech Nation endorses applicants in digital technology. GOV.UK routes your Stage 1 application to them after you apply online.
At least two, on top of the mandatory criterion of being recognised by others in the last 5 years.
GOV.UK says you will usually get a decision on a digital technology endorsement within 5 to 8 weeks. Research fast-track decisions take about 2 weeks.
Yes. There is no set limit on reapplying. It is usually worth fixing the specific weakness the endorsing body identified before applying again.
