Global Talent vs Innovator Founder vs NIV vs EB-1A and O-1A: the complete guide

We work on all five of these routes, and the most useful thing we can do on a first call is often to rule some out. This guide does the same thing in writing: who each route is really for, what it needs and what you get at the end.

Who each route suits

UK Global Talent

For people whose work is recognised beyond their employer: senior engineers at product companies, researchers with a strong publication record, founders with a track record, and artists with national standing. It gives the most freedom in the UK, with no employer ties and the option to start a business. See our complete Global Talent guide.

UK Innovator Founder

For founders with a specific, innovative business idea and the background to build it. It's the right route when the business is the point. Settlement depends on business results, so plan for the settlement criteria from day one.

Australia National Innovation Visa

For people with an international profile, especially in the priority sectors: critical technologies, renewables and low emission technologies, and health industries. It's the only one of the five that is permanent from day one without a job, but it's by invitation and the bar is high. See NIV eligibility.

US EB-1A

For people with a strong public record who want a US green card without an employer. Researchers with citations and peer review work, founders with serious funding and press, and senior engineers with patents and a critical role at a well-known company. See the EB-1A guide.

US O-1A

For people at a similar level who have a US employer or agent, or whose record is strong but not yet EB-1A-strong. Often the first step before an EB-1A. See EB-1A vs O-1A.

Five questions to narrow it down

1. Where do you actually want to live? This rules out more options than anything else.
2. Are you building a business, or building a career? Business points to Innovator Founder. Career points to the others.
3. Would people outside your employer vouch for your work? If not yet, focus on building that before the talent routes, or look at employer-based options like the EU Blue Card.
4. Do you have a US employer or agent? If yes, the O-1A is open. If not, the EB-1A is the US route.
5. Were you born in India and aiming for the US? Factor in the EB-1 Visa Bulletin wait, and consider an O-1A in the meantime.

Common mistakes

• Choosing by prestige rather than evidence, then being refused.
• Applying for Innovator Founder with an idea written for the visa, not a market.
• Assuming the NIV is open to anyone with a good salary. Salary is one indicator among several.
• Treating the O-1A as a lesser option. For many people it's the right first move.
